EIA-649, “Configuration Management Standard”, is the best-known industry standard for configuration management (CM). It covers the full scope of CM. It explains CM and provides the rationale for the various CM processes. It is applicable to both commercial and government environments. It addresses overall the what and why for best CM practices, as well as what is required in order to claim compliance (i.e. the normative aspects) to the standard.
Virtually all current standards or industry requirements for CM (such as government standards, ITIL CM requirements, ISO 10007 CM guidance, AS9100 and more) share the same principles as defined within EIA-649. SAE-EIA-649C offers valuable advice on requirements for achieving successful CM implementations. Its authors come from various commercial and government backgrounds and are experts in the field of CM.
